Brunstane Bowling Club

The club was originally a railway club and was founded in 1925. At that time it was known as Portobello and District LNER club and the members were employees of London and North Eastern Railways.

The first clubhouse was a converted railway carriage and there is a painting of this in our club house.
There were changes... The, then new, pavilion was opened in 1935 and the green relaid in 1938.

Of course the club also lost its original railway identity.

In those days, as now, the women contributed a lot to the club and they gained official status in 1934.
The Women's section of Brunstane were founder members of the Scottish Women's Bowling Association as well as the East of Scotland W.B.A.

The present clubhouse was completed in 1995. In 1996 the club joined the Edinburgh Bowling league after several years playing in the East League.

Over the past few years the club has gone from strength to strength, with the Gents' 1st team climbing through the ranks from the Fifth Division of the EBL to the First Division. Our Gents' 2nd team are in the EBL Second Division and for the moment our 3rd team are in Division 3. We are lucky to have enough members to field 3 competitive teams. The more mature among them also play in the SESBA on a Tuesday and the RMBA on a Thursday.

Increasingly our members win honours and we have sent a few players to the National Finals in Ayr in recent years. Including, in the last 2 years, a Gents District Champion and an over 55 Ladies District Champion.

The Ladies play in the Monday Evening League and the Tuesday Triples League as well as the Forth League and the Scotia League.

There are many internal competitions and the club hosts friendlies as well as Open and Invitation events.

Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated coaches we also have a thriving Junior Section. Coaching is also available to new members if required. The coaches have established a link with Brunstane Primary School who bring along some of their primary 7 pupils for 6 weeks during May and June.

The club runs regular social events throughout the year - cabarets, BBQ, darts and dominoes in the winter as well as a Ladies Wednesday afternoon programme.

At present we have 130 + members which includes social membership and junior members. Our financial situation is healthy.

We are a friendly club, doing well and looking forward to celebrating our 100th Anniversary in a few years time...
